Das liegt zum einen an den vielen Hits, die Erinnerungen wecken und durch ihre Intensität immer noch berühren. Zum anderen liegt es am Ex-Supertramp-Sänger selbst. Seine Entspanntheit steckt an. Seine höfliche Zurückhaltung ist herzerwärmend. Und die Anekdoten, die er lächelnd vorträgt, sind humorvoll und aufrichtig.

Konzert hat sich um eine halbe Stunde verzögert

So entschuldigt er sich zu Beginn für die Verzögerung um eine halbe Stunde. Er sei davon ausgegangen, dass es erst um acht Uhr losginge. Als er das erklärt, sind die ungeduldigen Pfiffe längst in Vergessenheit geraten. Das Publikum schwebt nach der Eröffnung mit „Take The Long Way Home“ bereits kollektiv im siebten Himmel. „Ich bin vor jedem Konzert aufgeregt und jede Show ist anders, das werdet ihr merken“, sagt der zierliche Mann mit den angegrauten, schulterlangen Haaren in einer Bescheidenheit, die er in Anbetracht seiner Erfolge nicht an den Tag legen müsste. Der 62-jährige Engländer gilt als herausragender Komponist unserer Zeit. Alle maßgeblichen Supertramp-Hits lieferte er.

An diesem Abend reiht sich einer an den nächsten: „Give A Little Bit“, „Dreamer“, „The Logical Song“, „It’s Raining Again“ und natürlich „Breakfast In America“. Zu Letzterem verrät der Sänger mit einem Augenzwinkern: „Jeder mag den Song, mit Ausnahme meiner Freundin. Das ist nicht so gut für die Beziehung.“ Zwischen den unverwüstlichen Hits spielt er weniger bekannte Balladen. Einen Höhepunkt bietet das zehnminütige hörspielartige Akustik-Spektakel „Fools Overture“ – eine Collage aus Elektrosounds, Geräuschen und Gesang, das extreme Sogwirkung entfaltet. Fünf Jahre war er mit dem komplexen Werk beschäftigt, bis die Einzelteile zum harmonischen Ganzen verschmolzen.

Topfpflanzen stehen im Hintergrund

Minimalistisch dagegen die Bühne: Vier mannshohe Topfpflanzen stehen im Hintergrund, darüber der Name des Sängers in Versalien, ein paar bunte Scheinwerfer. Das ist alles. Dazu: Trockeneisnebel. Hodgson bewegt sich in einem Ensemble aus Tasteninstrumenten, spielt zwischendurch Gitarre. Für die sehnsuchtvollen Mundharmonika-, Saxophon- und Trompeten-Einlagen, die Gänsehautmomente erzeugen, ist Aaron MacDonald zuständig. Er spielt außerdem Keyboard und fügt der hellen Tenorstimme Hodgsons in den Refrains eine dunklere Note hinzu. Die beiden Musiker verstehen sich blind.

Seit 1983 verfolgt Roger Hodgson seine Solokarriere, nachdem er Supertramp aufgrund musikalischer Differenzen verließ. Er hat mehrere Alben veröffentlicht. Stets betont er, dass die Songs seine persönlichen Erfahrungen und seinen Blick auf die Dinge enthalten. Diese Tatsache erzeugt das Wohlfühlgefühl. Reasons for that are for once the many hits which bring out memories and are still touching us through their intensity and secondly it is due to the ex-Supertramp singer himself. His relaxed and calm manner is contagious. His kind gentleness is heartwarming. And the anecdotes he is telling with a smile are humorous and authentic.

Concert begins half an hour late

One highlight is the ten-minute sonic spectacle that has audio drama qualities, „Fool's Overture“ - a collage of electronic sounds, noises and vocals which unfolds an extreme knock-on effect. It took him five years to melt the single parts of the complex piece into a harmonious whole.

Potted plants in the background

Minimalist is the word to describe the stage: Four six-foot potted plants in the background, above them the artist's name in majuscule, a couple of coulored spotlights. That's it. Plus: dry ice fog. Hodgson moves amongst an ensemble of keyboard instruments and inbetween he plays the guitar. Then there is Aaron MacDonald who is responsible for the yearning mouth-harmonica, saxophone, and trumpet interludes which cause goosebumps. Besides he is playing keyboard and by singing backing vocals he adds a darker touch to Hodgson's clear tenor voice. The two musicians have an almost telepathic understanding.

Hodgson is pursuing a solo career since he has left Supertramp back in 1983 due to musical differences. He has released several albums. He keeps emphasizing that the songs are based on his personal experiences and that they are his view on things. This is what generates the Feel-Good-emotion. And each single one of those snapshots is rewarded with huge applause by the audience for more than one and a half hours.

Roger Hodgson's declared objective, which is to make people happy and make them forget their worries has been achieved in the end – one hundred per cent.
