Was für ein Festivalauftakt gestern Abend im grössten Rundzelt der Schweiz am Fusse des berühmtesten Berges der Alpen: Der erste Sänger der langen Musiknacht eröffnete das vierte Zermatt Unplugged mit dem schlichten Satz „My name is Roger Hodgson“ – und erntete herzliche Lacher aus dem zahlreich erschienenen Publikum. THE Voice of Supertramp, ein Urgestein der Musik wie das Matterhorn der Alpen, muss sich wahrlich nicht vorstellen.

„Give a little bit“ stimmte Hodgson gleich zu Beginn an – und gab während über zwei Stunden alles an Wärme und Sympathie für seine 1500 Zuhörer im Speziellen und die Schweiz im Besonderen. „You have a beautiful country, gratulation, take care“, rief der Brite, der heute in Kalifornien lebt, mit seiner unnachahmlichen Stimme in die Nacht hinaus. THE voice eben, die Supertramp prägte, auf 60 Millionen verkauften Tonträgern verewigt ist und im Festivalzelt so frisch rüberkam, als hätte er die Songs erst letzte Woche geschrieben. Roger Hodgson, 61, brauchte denn auch jeweils nur den ersten Akkord anzustimmen, und schon war dem Publikum sonnenklar, was folgte: „Take the long way home“, „Dreamer“ oder „The Logical Song“ etwa. Und natürliche fehlte weder „It's raining again“ noch „Take a look at my Girlfriend“ – Popballaden, die die mehrheitlich mittelalterlichen Festivalbesucher durch die Jugend begleitet haben und die am liebsten ausgerufen hätten: „Take a look at this man“ – schlank und rank wie eh und je, mit schulterlangem Haar und virtuosem Griff in die Tasten und Saiten. Der kanadische Saxophonist Aaron McDonald tat das seine, um Supertramp unplugged zu einem einmalig gelungenen Festivalauftakt werden zu lassen.

What an amazing beginning to Zermatt Unplugged yesterday evening in the largest Swiss marquee in Switzerland at the foot of the most famous mountain in the Alps: The first singer of the long night of music opened the fourth edition of Zermatt Unplugged with the simple sentence “My name is Roger Hodgson” - and earned hearty laughter from the large audience. THE Voice of Supertramp, who is as much a part of the music scene as the Matterhorn is of the Alps, really needed no introduction.

Hodgson sang “Give a little bit” right at the beginning of the show – and for more than two hours gave all his warmth and affection to his 1,500 listeners in particular and Switzerland in general. “You have a beautiful country, ‘gratulations, take care,” called out the Brit, who nowadays lives in California, into the night in his inimitable voice. THE voice that had left its mark on Supertramp, immortalized on records sold 60 million times, and that came across as freshly in the marquee as if he’d only written the songs last week. The 61-year-old Roger Hodgson only needed to play the first chord of a song for the audience to know exactly what would follow: “Take the long way home”, “Dreamer” or “The Logical Song”, for example. And, of course, he couldn’t leave out “It's raining again” or “Take a look at my Girlfriend” – pop ballads that were part and parcel of the mostly middle-aged festival-goers’ youth, who would probably have liked to exclaim “Take a look at this man” – as lithe and lissom as ever, with shoulder-length hair, a virtuoso musician on both keys and strings. The Canadian sax player Aaron McDonald also did his bit to make Supertramp unplugged a uniquely successful start to the festival.

Quel début de festival, hier soir, sous le plus grand chapiteau de Suisse au pied de la montagne la plus connue des Alpes ! Le premier chanteur de la longue nuit musicale a ouvert la quatrième édition du festival avec la simple phrase “ Mon nom est Roger Hodgson” - déclenchant les généreux éclats de rire d’un public venu en nombre. LA voix de Supertramp, un géant qui est à la musique ce que le Cervin est aux Alpes, n’a vraiment plus à se présenter...

“Give a little bit” a entonné Hodgson pour commencer – plein de sympathie et de chaleur pendant plus de deux heures pour ses 1500 spectateurs en particulier et pour la Suisse également. "You have a beautiful country, gratulation, take care", a lancé dans la nuit de sa voix inimitable le Britannique, aujourd’hui installé en Californie. LA voix mythique de Supertramp, immortalisée sur 60 millions d'albums vendus, s’est exprimée avec tant de fraicheur sous la tente du festival qu’on aurait cru que les chansons avaient été écrites la veille. Pour chacune, Roger Hodgson, 61 ans, n’a eu besoin que de jouer le premier accord pour que le public sache exactement ce qui allait suivre : "Take the long way home", "Dreamer" ou "The Logical Song" par exemple. Bien sûr, n’ont manqué ni "It's raining again" ni "Take a look at my Girlfriend" – des ballades pop qui ont accompagné la jeunesse de la majorité des spectateurs d’âge moyen. Ils auraient sans doute voulu chanter : « Take a look at this man » – svelte et souple comme toujours, avec des cheveux aux épaules et des mains aussi virtuoses sur les touches que sur les cordes. Le saxophoniste canadien Aaron McDonald a apporté sa large contribution à une ouverture de festival exceptionnelle placée sous le signe de Supertramp Unplugged.
