AN ETERNAL SMILE
Por Sebastián Fissore
Last Tuesday I was lucky enough to be able to see a show—a show where I was neither dazzled by the mise-en-scène nor by what I heard (we all knew how it was going to sound), but rather by the magical quality exuded by a man on stage.
I’m talking about Roger Hodgson, the former lead singer of Supertramp (for those who don't already know), an artist who has had an equally prolific solo career.
Past his divorce from music, which left us for 10 years without his musical chemistry, the 60-something year old showed us, with great wisdom and humility, that his vocal chords had stood the test of time and that he could still sing as well as ever.
As part of his Breakfast in America tour he delighted us with a number of all-too-familiar hits that you would struggle not to hear on any classic radio station around the world, opening with “Take a Long Way Home”, before playing “School” and “In Jeopardy”.
A precise and compact band accompanied Hodgson, highlighting the versatility of multi-instrumentalist Aaron Macdonald, whose job it was to lead and refine the overall atmosphere of the show.
“Death and the Zoo” and “Fool´s Overture” moved away from the obligatory hits “The Logical Song” and “Dreamer”, showing testament to Hodgson’s progressive and existentialist compositional ability.
After 2 hours of an impeccable-sounding show, the evening was brought to a close by “Give a little bit” and “It’s Raining Again”, which irradiated happiness and saw the 3 or 4 generations present give a standing ovation.
Although I didn’t take any photos this time, the eternal smile of legend Roger Hodgson will remain with me forever.
