Roger Hodgson, líder de la legendaria banda Supertramp, la noche del martes en el Ágora de la Casa de la Cultura no solo fue un cantante, sino un narrador de historias.
Vestido con una chaqueta crema, una camisa blanca y pantalón negro, el artista inglés ingresó al escenario decorado con cuatro árboles de ficus en miniatura y una luz en contrapicada que se reflejaba en ellos dándoles un verdor surrealista.
Su esperada presentación, que se dio por el anunciado Breakfast in America Tour 2012, inició a las 20:55 con un “Hola Qui-top… Es fantástico estar por tercera ocasión en este país. Mi español es muy malo… Es tan gratificante ver sus rostros, unos bellos rostros... Ahora canten todos conmigo… Silben”. Este fue el leve discurso que dio el intérprete en un espanglish al que los latinoamericanos estamos acostumbrados en este tipo de conciertos.
Take the long way home fue el tema de apertura al que le continuaron quince, los que interpretó tocando el teclado, la guitarra y el piano, instrumentos que cambió en repetidas ocasiones. Breakfast in America, School, Give a Little Bit, The logical song y Dreamer fueron, sin duda, las canciones más ovacionadas.
Sin propuestas coreográficas, ni exaltados movimientos, “Mr. Supertramp” logró que las cerca de tres mil personas de todas las edades corearan, silbaran, gritaran y hasta se besaran de emoción.

Pedro Serrano, de 50 años, asistió con sus hijos Ana María, de 12, y Mateo, de 9 años. El fanático escucha la banda desde hace tres décadas y cuando supo que Hodgson vendría a Ecuador contagió a sus hijos con las canciones, hizo que las escucharan para que aprendan buena música.
Por otro lado, Dolores Santillán, de la misma generación que Serrano, se reencontró en vivo con la música de la agrupación que escucha hace mucho tiempo. Ella acudió al Ágora con su esposo e hijo menor de edad. “Esta vez lo trajimos a él. En la última presentación de Supertramp no pudimos traerlo porque era muy pequeño”, expresó la mujer.
Oscar, integrante de la banda de heavy metal Código Rojo, coreó Breakfast in America a todo pulmón. “Toda la vida he escuchado los acetatos de mi papá y mis tíos, desde los nueve años hasta ahora que tengo 31. Recuerdo que de tanto oírlos hacían saltar la aguja y sonaba como canguil”.
De espaldas al escenario, los únicos que no pudieron disfrutar del espectáculo fueron las setenta personas que se ocuparon de la seguridad. Marcos Beltrán, jefe de este cordón, quien merodeaba las diferentes localidades, aseguró haber disfrutado más de trescientos conciertos de espaldas en sus doce años de carrera.
A las 23:00, sonidos de campanas se escucharon dentro del Ágora. Era Dreamer, canción que cerraría el espectáculo. Sin embargo, a petición del público, Hodgson retornó a la tarima para complacer a la eufórica masa con más éxitos, incluyendo It’s raining again, melodía con la que se despidió.
