Im Laufe der Zeit wachsen Flügel

Wie eh und je: Roger Hodgson punktet lässig mit dem Nachlass von Supertramp.

Manchmal bekommt der Pop Flügel: „Fast hätten wir es nicht mehr geschafft, rechtzeitig hier zu sein“, erklärt Roger Hodgson im vollbesetzten Tollwood-Zelt, „aber dann haben wir auf halbem Weg einen kleinen Privat-Jet gemietet. Denn nach München zu kommen, ist wie nach Hause zu kommen“. Wer kann, der kann. Und dann zum Einstieg „Take The Long Way Home“!

Roger Hodgson, neben Rick Davies einer der beiden Nachlassverwalter von Supertramp (für viele der bessere), kommt ohne Band. An seiner Seite lediglich Eric McDonald, der Mundharmonika, Melodika, alle möglichen Blasinstrumente – vor allem Saxophon - plus Keyboards spielt und damit die typischen Sound-Tupfer spendet.

Hodgson an den Keyboards und an der Gitarre abwechselnd, je nachdem. Hauptsächlich aber als Sänger seiner unvergessenen Hits: „Give A Little Bit“, „It’s Raining Again“, „Breakfast In America“, „The Logical Song“, und in der Zugabe „Dreamer“ und „School“.

Dazwischen aber auch Kompositionen, die nicht so bekannt sind, ihm aber, wie er sagt, sehr ans Herz gewachsen sind: „Easy Does It“, „Sister Moonshine“ und das Monsterwerk „The Fool’s Overture“, sicher eines der Highlights dieses Abends.

Die Gesangsstimme leicht und glockenklar wie einst im Studio; die Präsentation und Moderation charmant, locker. Und das Schönste: Man vermisst keinen Augenblick die Band. Alle Songs sprechen für sich. Denn sie haben im Lauf der Zeit Flügel bekommen.

Der zweite Teil der großen Supertramp-Retrospektive – dann aber mit Hodgons Ex-Partner Rick Davies und Kollegen – kommt am 20. September in die Olympiahalle. Und man darf mehr als gespannt sein.

In the course of time there are growing wings

As ever, Roger Hodgson scores easily with the heritage of Supertramp.

Sometimes the pop is getting wings: “We almost wouldn’t have made it to arrive here in time”, Roger Hodgson explains in the full up Tollwood-tent, “but then we hired a small private jet partway, because coming to Munich is like coming home.” And then he starts with “Take the long way home”.

Roger Hodgson, for many people the better “curator” of the heritage of Supertramp beside Rick Davies, is performing without a band. On his side, there is only Aaron MacDonald, who plays mouthorgan, melodica, all kinds of wind instruments, especially saxophone, and also keyboards and donates the typical sound dabs.

Hodgson, according to the song, switches between keyboards and guitar and mainly he is of course the singer of his memorable hits  "Give A Little Bit," "It's Raining Again", "Breakfast In America", "The Logical Song", and the encores  "Dreamer" and "School".

In between he is also performing some more or less unknown compositions like „Easy Does It“ and „Sister Moonshine“, which are very dear to his heart he says. And not to forget the masterpiece “Fools Overture”.

His voice is gently and as clear as a bell, as it was once in a studio many years ago. His performance and moderation is charming and with ease.  And the best thing is: you don’t miss the band for a single moment. All the songs tell their own tale, for there have grown wings to them over time.

The second part of the great Supertramp Retrospective - but then with Hodgsons ex-partner Rick Davies and colleagues – is also performing in Munich on September 21th . And we must be more than excited.
