Genialer Wohlfühl-Rock

Roger Hodgson machte aus der Wörtherseebühne einen schwankenden Musikantenstadel für Nostalgiker und Freunde eines zeitlosen Dino-Pop.

Als ich noch jung war, da schien mir das Leben so wunderschön", heißt es zu Beginn des "Logical Song". Montagabend verfielen die mehrheitlich leicht angegrauten Gäste der Wörtherseebühne in ähnliche Melancholie, als Roger Hodgson mit ungebrochen markerschütterndem Tenor seinen Ohrwurm aus den 1970ern zum Besten gab.

Hormonelle Wallungen

Wie der sympathische Berufsjugendliche aus der Jungschargruppe stand der 59-jährige mit Gitarre und Hawai-Hemd auf der Bühne, verteilte Komplimente ans Publikum ("Sie müssen hier glückliche Menschen sein") und weckte mit Hits wie "Take The Long Way Home" Erinnerungen an frühe hormonelle Wallungen und Sinnfragen. "Deep from my heart" kämen seine Lieder und "Let me give a little bit of my love to you", lautete seine Botschaft, die ihm bisher rund 60 Millionen verkaufter Alben bescherte.

Dass der Mix aus keyboardlastigem Wellnessrock und hintergründig-schlichten Texten auch heute noch funktioniert, bewies der Ex-Partner von Rick Davies und John Helliwell an der Seite des Kanadiers Aaron McDonald, der sich an Sax und Harmonika als kongenialer Mundwerker erwies. Etwa beim Intro zu "School", welches sich das Publikum als Zugabe ertrampelte.

Zuvor gab es freilich auch kommerzielle Gassenhauer wie "Dreamer" oder "Breakfast in America" zu hören. Sie machten die Seebühne vollends zum schwankenden Musikantenstadel von begeisterten Post-68ern.

Uraufführung

Bevor am Schluss "It´s Raining Again" ertönte, übrigens zu Unrecht an diesem Abend, betörte der charismatische Engländer eingefleischte Fans mit "Fool´s Overture", dem bombastischen "Child of Vision", einem religiös angehauchten "Lord is it Mine" oder der elegischen Welturaufführung von "I Knew, It Will".

Dass sich die mehr als 2000 Seebühnenbesucher in frühere Zeiten versetzt fühlen konnten, dafür sorgte nicht zuletzt die Tonanlage: Sie dröhnte bei den hämmernden Akkorden so blechern wie der Plattenspieler aus der alte Studentenbude.

Also, fast alles Roger! Hodgson versprach wiederzukommen und künftige Urlaube am Wörthersee zu verbringen. Eine starke Ansage für einen "Supervagabunden".

Ingenious rock that makes you feel good

Roger Hodgson turned the “Wörtherseebühne” into a rocking “Musikantenstadel” (this is a typical Austrian or Bavarian folk-music event) for nostalgic fans and friends of a timeless dino-pop.

“When I was young, it seemed that life was so wonderful”, states at the beginning of “The Logical Song”. On Monday evening the majoritarian grey haired guests of the “Wörtherseebühne” lapsed into a similar melancholy, when Roger Hodgson presented his earworm from the 70’s with his unbroken staggeringly tenor voice.

Hormonal Flushes

The 59-year-old singer, dressed with a Hawaii-shirt, stood on stage like the sympathetic teenager from the youth group and gave compliments to the audience (“You seem to be very happy people here”) and with hits like “Take the long way home” he awoke memories of the times of hormonal flushes and the essential questions.

His songs came “Deep from my heart” and his message “Let me give a little bit of my love to you” brought him about 60 million sold albums so far.

The ex-partner of Rick Davies and John Helliwell proved the fact, that the mix between a keyboard dominated wellness-rock and profound but simple lyrics is still functioning. The Canadian Aaron McDonald turned out to be a congenial musician at his wind instruments saxophone and mouth organ, for instance at the intro of the encore “School”.

Beforehand there were of course popular melodies like “Dreamer” or “Breakfast in America”. They really turned the “Wörtherseebühne” into a rocking “Musikantenstadl” of enthusiastic post hippies.

World Premier

Before he performed “It’s raining again” – due to the weather wrongfully at this evening – the charismatic Englishmen indulged his diehard fans with “Fools Overture”, the bombastic sounding “Child of vision”, the religious touched “Lord is it mine” or the world premier of “I knew, It Will”.

The sound system made sure that the 2000 visitors of the “Wörtherseebühne” had the feeling to be in the past days, because the hammering chords sounded as tinny like they did with an old record player.

So, “Alles Roger!” (That’s a wordplay, in German we say “Alles Roger!” and that  means “Alright!”)

Hodgson promised to come back and spend one of his holidays at the “Wörthersee”. What a statement from a “Supertramper”.
