„Mr. Supertramp” begeistert drei Generationen

Osnabrück - ,,Give a little bit” – d a glänzen die Augen und jubeln die Füße. Nicht nur ausgeschlafene „Dreamer“ schreien immer noch („clinical, intellectual, cynical...”) nach dem „Logical Song“ und fühlen sich wie „Lovers In The Wind“. „School“, „Don’t leave me now“, „It’s raining again“ – Hits nonstop. Viele Fans wollen nach wie vor „Supertramp“ inhalieren, und das geht am besten mit Roger Hodgson, der 1983 seinen kongenialen Sound-Partner Rick Davies und die Band verließ, und selbst mit kleinem Besteck authentischer klingt als der Rest vom Schützenfest. Entspannt beantwortete Superstar Roger Hodgson (59) die Fragen von ON-Redakteur Werner Hülsmann. Es geht um Hits, Spiritualität und Lebensfreude.

Tja, Roger Hodgson, „Mr. Supertramp”, es ist mir schon eine große Ehre, schließlich ist mit diesen Songs durch die späte Jugend geflattert... Sie sehen sehr entspannt aus während der „Take The Long Way Home“-Shows , die DVD ist der beste Beweis. Alles im Lot?

Roger Hodgson: Ja, es ist eine wahre Freude. Fans haben ja schon seit Jahren nach einer DVD gefragt. Ich wollte Ihnen die Erfahrung vermitteln, so ein Konzerterlebnis im eigenen Haus zu haben. Wenn man nach den E-Mails und sonstigen Äußerungen geht, hat das Ding wohl eingeschlagen. Sie lieben es. Nummer 1 in Kanada, Mehrfach-Platin in vielen Ländern, seit September 2007 ist die Scheibe auf dem Markt. Wir haben in bester Auflösung gefilmt, da war in Montreal ein wundervolles Team sehr kreativer Leute am Start. Top war auch der französische Regisseur Gerard Pullicino, so konnten wir wirklich eine hohe Qualität auf DVD bannen und meine Solo-Show in Szene setzen. Wir haben an Interviews, Bildern und unveröffentlichten Sequenzen alles zusammengetragen, die Fans fragten z. B. häufig nach Orchestermaterial von „Fool's Ouverture“.

Das Publikum schätzt die Intimität der Shows, den puren Stoff mit Hodgson an den Tasten und Saiten. Nur Aaron MacDonald am Saxophon begleitet Rogers Reise in die Vergangenheit – pure Magie?

Wer die DVD hat, weiß um die Intimität meiner Soloshows. Einzigartig macht diese Konzerte, dass die Leute die Songs quasi so hören, wie sie klangen, als ich sie schrieb und entwickelte. Immer wieder kommen Fans zu mir, die total erstaunt sind , wie komplett die Songs klingen. Sie können es kaum glauben, wie Keyboard, Klavier und Gitarre aus einer Hand für so einen enormen Sound sorgen. Diese Solo-Konzerte mag ich total, da ist so eine gewaltige und unmittelbare Verbindung mit dem Publikum. Klar, so ist es einfach für mich, mein Herz zu öffnen und in die Songs zu schütten.

Glänzende Augen und große Momente – keineswegs nur was für ein rüstiges Über-45-Publikum?

Genau. Überall erfreut mich die Erkenntnis, dass die Songs drei Generationen begeistern. „Breakfast in Amerika“, ,,Give A Little Bit“ und „Logical Song“ sind vor kurzem ja an die Chartgipfel zurückgekehrt. Die American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers ehrte sie in der Reihe der am meisten gespielten Songs. Jüngst hatten Gym Class Heroes einen weltweiten Hit mit „Breakfast in Amerika“, eine unbekannte Garagenband schaffe es so an die Spitze der Charts. Davor waren The Goo Goo Dolls mit „Give a Little Bit” and Scooter mit „The Logical Song” erfolgreich. Es ist verblüffend, dass man erleben darf, wie toll die Songs den Test der Zeit bestanden haben.

„Logical, responsible, practical...” Ihre Stimme ist bis heute das Herz und die Seele von Supertamp – legendär bleibt das „gesungene Pingpong“ mit Rick Davies, der lyrisch rockende Doppelpass in konträren Tonlagen. War es ein Fehler, Supertramp 1983 zu verlassen?

Als ich Supertramp 1983 verließ, war es eine Herzensentscheidung. Die innere Stimme sagte mir, das Zuhause und die Familie zu meinen Prioritäten zu machen. Die Kinder aufwachsen sehen, einen naturbezogenen Lebensstil entdecken und spirituelle Werte erkennen... Ich habe 14 Jahre meines Lebens Supertramp gewidmet. An diesem Punkt wählte ich nicht die Karriere als oberstes Ziel, die Entscheidung galt der Familie und dem Entschluss, ein Vater zu sein. Es war eine schwierige Entscheidung, aber ein Weg, der mich bis heute sehr glücklich gemacht hat. Ich bereue nichts, es war genau richtig so.

Auch wo Hodgson drauf steht, ist eigentlich Supertamp drin. Oder?

Als Künstler ist es schon komisch, wenn man gefragt wird, warum man denn Supertramp-Songs singt? Ich sehe meine Stücke nicht als Supertramp-Songs. Es sind meine Songs, tatsächlich habe vieles geschrieben und komponiert, bevor ich es mit Supertramp aufgenommen habe. Einige der größten Hits schrieb ich in meinen späten Jugendjahren, bevor ich Rick traf und wir Supertramp gründeten. Songs wie „Give a Little Bit”, „Dreamer”, „It's Raining Again” and „Breakfast in America”, sogar den Anfang von „Fool's Overture” habe ich allesamt in dieser Zeitspanne geschrieben.

Die sehr spezielle, hohe Stimme – ein Geschenk der Natur oder ein trainiertes Instrument?

Meine Stimme ist ganz natürlich. Ich bin glücklich, dass ich meine von Gott gegebenen Talente so einsetzen kann, dass sie Menschen glücklich machen.

„Clinical, intellectual, cynical ...” Das Tour-Motto „Take The Long Way home” hat eine philosophische und biografische Seite. Fast ein schicksalhafter Baum der Erkenntnis! Vor 20 Jahren passierte ein dramatischer Unfall auf Hodgsons kalifornischen An-wesen... Die Folgen?

Ich spreche darüber wirklich nicht oft. In der Woche, als mein zweites Soloalbum „Hai Hai“ erschien, hatte ich einen Unfall, bei dem ich mir beide Handgelenke brach. Als ich im Krankenhaus ankam, war das erste, was der Doktor sagte, als er hörte, dass ich ein Musiker bin: „Oh, Sie werden niemals wieder spielen können.“ Ich stand regelrecht unter Schock, denn – das werdet ihr euch vorstellen können – das war die wohl schlechteste Nachricht im Wunschprogramm eines Musikers. Ich glaubte dem Doktor einfach nicht, weil ich fühle, dass ich wieder spielen würde. Ich sagte mir, es wird nur eine Frage der Zeit sein...

Ein einschneidender Lebensabschnitt ?

Eine ungeheure Erfahrung! Das größte Geschenk war die Erfahrung, wieder verbunden zu sein mit einem inneren Gottesgefühl. Das war mein wahrer Support mit heilender Kraft. In meiner später Jugend und als Mann in den früher Zwanzigen war ich ein Suchender. Ich hatte schon die tiefe Sehnsucht, Gott zu begegnen. Dieses Verlangen ist die Schnittstelle, auf der so viele meiner Songs geboren wurden.

Antworten also schließlich in der Spiritualität, dem Blick über das tägliche Geschäft hinaus?

Mit der Reife der Jahre habe ich viele Antworten auf die Fragen meiner Jugend gefunden. Ich habe meine Spiritualität zugebilligt, mein Kompass zu sein und mich durch das Leben zu geleiten.

Was treibt Sie im Musik-Business an?

Gerade jetzt empfinde ich es als große Freude, live zu spielen und von Zeit zu Zeit auch neue Songs in die Konzerte zu integrieren. Ich bin dankbar, ein Vermächtnis an Songs zu haben, die im Leben so vieler Menschen eine Rolle spielen. Ich bin froh, dass meine Stimme stärker denn je ist und mich mein Job durch die ganze Welt führt. Es könnte nicht besser sein – ich bin ein gesegneter und vom Glück verwöhnter Mann!

„Open The Door”, erschienen 2003, was das erste Solo-Album nach einem Vakuum von 13 Jahren, es ist sehr gut komponiert und begeistert auf Anhieb. Eigentlich eine Rock-Oper mit allen berühmten Hodgson-Zutaten! Sind ein paar Nummern im Programm?

Ja, viele Leute fragen nach diesen Songs. „Along Came Mary“ ist ein Fan-Favorit , ich habe auch schon „The More I Look” und manchmal auch „Love is a Thousand Times” gespielt. Das Album gibt es im Moment leider nur noch über meine Homepage und natürlich nach den Shows.

In der Rockgeschichte ist Supertramp ohne frage ein Meilenstein. Ist ein Comeback in Bestbesetzung völlig ausgeschlossen?

Wir haben in den Jahr en schon mal über eine Reunion gesprochen und nachgedacht. I'll never say never. Aber ich konzentriere mich auf das, was ich tue. Es verzückt und motiviert mich, wie stark die Leute drauf abfahren, die Original-Stimme zu hören, mit der sie die Songs verbinden.

Für mich sind „Crime Of The Century” (1974) und „Even In The Quietest Moments” (1977) die wohl zeitlosesten Supertramp-Alben – was sagt der Meister selbst?

Ich müsste jetzt eigentlich „Crisis What Crisis” (1975) sagen, das ist schon eine wunderbare Song-Kollektion. Ich erinnere mich, dass ich seinerzeit zur „Crisis“-Veröffentlichung schon etwas enttäuscht war, weil ich das Gefühl hatte, die Songs reizen ihr Potenzial nicht aus. Da lag ein ganz schöner Druck auf uns, eine Tour stand bevor, und wir hatten nicht die Zeit, die mir für das Optimum vorschwebte. Wir waren nicht in der Lage, noch mal ins Studio zurückzukehren. So waren die finalen Mixe nicht das, was ich erhoffte. Bei „Crime Of The Century“ waren wir viel akribischer ans Werk gegangen und hatten die Produktion besser vorbereitet.

Hand aufs Herz – was sind die drei Songs der Show, die ganz persönlich besondere Gefühle zulassen?

Eigentlich mag ich meistens jeden meiner Songs. I glaube, die Botschaft von „Give A Little Bit” ist heute noch relevanter als bei seinem Erscheinen. Das Thema von „Logical Song” schwingt immer noch in den Gefühlen der Menschen mit – ob jung oder al t. Und „Fool's Overture” oder „Lord is it mine” verursachen auch bei mir – nach all den Jahren – noch Gänsehaut. „Only Because of You“, „Lovers in the Wind“, „Even in the Quietest Moments“ – ich mag sie alle. Manche Leute empfinden meine Songs als an Gott gerichtete Liebeslieder, andere assoziieren eine geliebte Person aus ihrem Leben.

A lot of fans still want to inhale “Supertramp” and this works best with Roger Hodgson who left the band and his congenial partner in 1983 and sounds even with less instrumentation better then the rest of the band. Relaxed answered superstar Roger Hodgson (59) the questions of ON-editor Werner Hülsmann. The interview is about hits, spirituality and enjoyment of life.

Well, Roger Hodgson, “Mr. Supertamp”, it’s a real big honour for me, after all your songs guided me through my late youth… You look very relaxed during your „Take The Long Way Home“-Shows, the DVD is the best proof. Everything’s fine with you?

Roger Hodgson: Yes, it is real pleasure. My fans have been asking for a DVD for a couple of years. I wanted them to experience one of my concerts at home. Judging by the e-mails and other statements, it is a real zinger. They love it. Number 1 in Canada and multi-platinum in many other countries. The DVD is on sale since September 2007. We filmed it in the best resolution and we had a wonderful team of very creative people in Montreal. Superb was the French stage director Gerard Pullicino, so we could really capture a high quality on DVD and put my solo show in scene. We collated Interviews, pictures and unreleased material, because for example the fans often asked for an Orchestra Version of “Fool’s Overture”.

The audience appreciates the intimacy of your shows, Hodgson pure only with keys and strings. Only Aaron Mac Donald accompanies Hodgson’s journey into the past. Is it magical?

Those who own the DVD also are aware of the intimacy of my solo-shows. These concerts are unique because the people hear my songs quasi the way they sounded when I wrote them. Again and again the fans are totally surprised how complete the songs sound. They hardly can believe it, that a keyboard, a piano and a guitar are able to create such an enormous sound. I simply love these solo-shows, because I feel such a strong and immediate connection to the audience. Of course it is easy for me then to open my heart and pour it into the songs.

Shining eyes and great moments – not at all only for an audience over 45 years?

That’s right. Everywhere I’m happy to realize, that the songs inspire three generations. „Breakfast in Amerika“, “Give A Little Bit“ and „Logical Song“ recently turned back to the charts. The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers honoured them in the rank of the most played songs. Recently, the Gym Class Heroes, and unknown carhouse band had a world wide hit with “Breakfast in America” and made it to the top of the charts that way. Shortly before, The Goo Goo Dolls were successful with “Give a little bit” and Scooter was successful with “The Logical Song”. It is amazing to experience, how great the songs have stood the test of time.

"Logical, responsible, practical...” your voice is till today the heart and soul of “Supertramp”, the legendary sung “ping-pong” between you and Rick Davies, the lyric-rocking “give and go” the contrary pitches. Was it a mistake to leave the band in 1983?

When I left Supertramp it was a decision of the heart. My inner voice told me to make my home and my family to my priority: to see my children grow up, to experience a nature lifestyle and to recognize spiritual values…I have devoted 14 years of my life to Supertramp. At this point I didn’t chose the career as my first priority, the decision was to be with my family and to be a father. It was a difficult decision, but it made me very happy until today and I don’t regret anything, it was exactly the right way.

Even where Hodgson is on it, is actually Supertamp inside, right?

As an artist it feels really strange when you are asked why you are singing Supertramp-songs. I don’t see my songs as Supertramp songs. They are my songs and actually I wrote many of my songs a long time before I recorded them with Supertramp. Some of my biggest hits were written in my late youth, before I met Rick and we founded Supertramp together. „Give a Little Bit”, „Dreamer”, „It's Raining Again” and „Breakfast in America” and even the opening of “Fool’s Overture” were written in that period of time.

Your very special, high-pitched voice - a gift of nature or a trained instrument?

My voice is quite natural. I am happy that I can use my God-given talents so that they make people happy.

"Clinical, intellectual, cynical ...” the motto of the “Take the long way home” tour has a philosophical and a biographical side. Almost a fateful tree of knowledge. Twenty years ago a dramatic accident happened at the estate of the Hodgson family in California…the consequences?

I really don’t talk about it very often. Right in the week when my second solo album “Hai Hai” was released, I had an accident in which I broke both wrists. The first thing the doctor said, when I arrived at the hospital and he heard that I’m a musician was: "Oh, you'll never be able to play again." I was totally shocked – as you can imagine this was probably the worst news in the life of a musician. But I didn’t believe his words to be true, because I felt that I would play again. I told myself that it will only be a matter of time ...

A drastic event in your life?

Yes, it was a tremendous experience. The greatest gift was the experience of being reconnected with an inner sense of God. That was my real support with a healing power. In my late youth and as a man in his early twenties I was a seeker. I had the deep longing to find God. This desire is the interface on which so many of my songs were born.

So you find your answers only in your spirituality? The view beyond the daily business?

With the growing age I have found many answers to the questions of my youth. I have allowed my spirituality to become my compass and guide me through life.

What is the animating spirit for you in the music business?

Right now it is a great pleasure for me to play live and to integrate new songs in my concerts from time to time. I am grateful to have a legacy of songs that play such an important role in the life of so many people. I am glad that my voice is stronger than ever, and that my job takes me all over the world. It could not be better – I’m a happy and very blessed man.

“Open the Door”, which was released in 2003, was the first solo album after a vacuum of 13 years. It is very well composed and fascinates right from the beginning. Actually it is a rock-opera with all the famous Hodgson ingredients! Do you play some of the songs in your concerts?

Yes, a lot of people want these songs. "Along Came Mary" is a fan-favorite, but I’m also playing "The More I Look" and “Love is a Thousand Times” sometimes. Unfortunately the album is currently only available through my homepage and of course after the shows.

In the history of rock Supertramp is without a doubt a milestone. Is a comeback with all the former members impossible?

We have thought and talked about a reunion in all those years. I’ll never say never. But I’m focusing on what I’m doing right now. It motivates and ecstasizes me how much the people love it to hear the original voice with which they connect the songs.

To me “Crime Of The Century” (1974) and “Even In The Quietest Moments” (1977) are the most timeless Supertramp albums, what is the opinion of the master himself?

Now I should really say 'Crisis What Crisis "(1975), which is a wonderful collection of songs. But I remember that I was a bit disappointed when “Crisis” was released, because I had the feeling the songs don’t exploit their full potential. We all were under a huge pressure, a tour was coming ahead and we didn’t have the time we actually needed for the optimum I had in mind. We were not able to return to the studio once more. Thus, the final mixes were not what I hoped for. With the “Crime of the Century” album we worked much more meticulous and the production was better prepared.

Be honest! Which three songs are the most emotional for you personally?

Actually I love all my songs. I think the message of “Give a little bit” is nowadays more relevant then it was when the song was released. The theme of “The Logical Song” is also very present in the emotions of the people - for the young and the young at heart. And “Fools Overture” or “Lord is it mine” also give me goose bumps – even after all those years. „Only Because of You“, „Lovers in the Wind“, „Even in the Quietest Moments“ – I love them all. Some people find my songs as love songs addressed to God, others associate a loved person in her life.
