Supertramp’s Roger Hodgson Gives Far More than a Little Bit
December 11, 2016 | By Lonn M. Friend
Arcada Theater, St. Charles, Illinois (Final stop on the near completely sold out, North America Tour 2016)
Swiss philosopher Carl Jung coined the term, synchronicity to describe a ‘confluence of events,’ or ineffable alignment where coincidence is dismissed and all things appear connected. The Universe, at least for an instant, makes perfect, poetic sense. It’s a matter of personal perspective. What you see is what you get. When I get to see a performer that jettisons me back to my youth aboard a cosmic carpet of classic songs forever woven into my subconscious, I get aligned and all is well with the cosmos.
On December 8, 2016, Roger Hodgson, founding member of the storied ‘70s progressive hit making British supergroup, Supertramp, got on stage at the ancient and precious Arcada Theater in St. Charles, Illinois and for two hours, made the insane outside world evaporate and the audience inside, one. John Lennon’s voice was silenced on this night 36 years ago and Greg Lake – the velvet piped vocalist of King Crimson and Emerson, Lake & Palmer – had passed away a few hours ago. The emotional chi in the room was palpable. We all felt it because we’re rock fans, united by kindred generation, concert goers, old stoners, lovers and loners, devoted for decades to the divine directives of the gifted storytellers that not just informed but gave meaning and essence to our entire adolescence.
The lights dim as theater owner and affable emcee, Ron “he’s one of us” Onesti, enthusiastically introduces our heroic headliner and his band of merry minstrels. The second his digits commence their ivory dance into an opening riff as familiar as our own heartbeats, we escape our midlives, cast asunder aches, pains, fears and inhibitions and join Sir Roger in song. “So you think you’re a Romeo/Playing a part in a picture show/Take the long way home/Take the long way home.” Thousands of miles from my angel city birthplace and the neon desert where I currently reside, I know that here, now, in this snow covered sanctuary of soul and sound, I am…home.
Roger Hodgson, Rick Davies, John Helliwell, Dougie Thompson and Bob Siebenberg arrived on my vinyl doorstep shortly after my 18th birthday in 1974 via the mind-warping LP,
Crime of the Century. Local alt rock radio station, KROQ, was spinning the infectious, “Dreamer” and “Bloody Well Right,” but it was the seven-minute existential opus, “Hide in Your Shell,” that hit me in the solar plexus and sent me on a bee-line to my local record shop, Moby Disc. It spoke to me then and still does today.
“I was 23 when I wrote that song,” recalled Hodgson in the 2014 remaster liner notes. “Confused about life and like a lot of people are at that age, trying to hide my insecurities. I’ve always been able to express my innermost feelings more openly in song and ‘Hide in Your Shell’ came to me at a time when I was feeling very lonely – lonely both in life and within the band – with no one who shared my spiritual quest.” No wonder my eyes were glassing over as he passionately delivered the soaring final verses. “Can’t you hear what I’m saying? I’m hoping I’m pleading I’m praying.” Church, Temple, Mosque – don’t matter. We’re in this congregation together, getting animated, roaring the words that we’d repeated hundreds of times either while driving around town with the windows down or in a concert hall on the outskirts of Chicago where both my parents were born. Impervious to shame or judgment, mindlessly and magnificently out of tune, we collectively croon, damn near cracking the theater’s near hundred-year old ceiling.

Enjoy this press review from KelownaNow for Roger's November 20 show at Prospera Place ~ "Hodgson’s band was on point with furious saxophone playing, funky bass riffs and the man himself sounded pitch perfect as he showcased that he more than dabbles at tickling the ivories. You couldn’t help but have your jaw hang open in awe at the miraculous musicianship."

Prospera Place a show to remember

Former co-frontman and founding member of progressive rock group Supertramp, Roger Hodgson, brought his immense talent and vast musical library to Prospera Place for the show of a lifetime on Sunday evening.
Known for his recognizable tenor vocal stylings, and incredible compositional abilities, Hodgson has been deemed responsible for the distinct melodies that became a crucial trademark for the 1970’s supergroup. Needless to say, to be in his presence was a dream come true for fans and had emotions running high for the shows entirety.
Having been in the industry for nearly five decades, fans were eager to find out which song of the many Hodgson has in his arsenal he would choose for his opener. Murmurs from the crowd filled the arena of each fans guesses. Finally, the space went pitch black and the fans murmurs of wonder were quickly elevated to cheers of sheer excitement.
Ominous synth and amp feedback created a growing ambient sound before the high pitch notes of southern rock harmonica shot out full force into the crowd, ringing tune of the familiar intro to chart topping 1979 hit “Take The Long Way Home,” and fans lost their minds.
Following the energy-ridden performance, Hodgson joked with fans.
“It seems I took the long way to Kelowna,” he said. “I’ve been waiting to explore this valley for awhile and you are all so blessed to live here”.
Not long after his chat with the crowd, Hodgson entranced fans with the psychedelic force of the philosophical jam “School." Swaying in unison, the crowd grooved in perfect harmony to the unique time signatures that make up the early 70's manifesto.
Hodgson then jumped right into yet another beloved hit, “Breakfast in America,” the title track from Supertramp’s most popular record. Hodgson’s band was on point with furious saxophone playing, funky bass riffs and the man himself sounded pitch perfect as he showcased that he more than dabbles at tickling the ivories. You couldn’t help but have your jaw hang open in awe at the miraculous musicianship.
The staging was almost as fantastic as the instrumentation. Equipped with real palm trees and ferociously bright bursts of coloured beams, fans were brought back to the warm glory days of summers passed.
“If you are having some issues right now in your life I hope you have left them at the door,” said Hodgson. “I feel so blessed to have had music in my life to express what’s inside, It’s kind of my refuge” he added as if he knew that his performance was the exact remedy some fans needed and began to play “Along Came Mary” from his millennial born album Open The Door.
A song filled with beautiful harmonies, simple and elegant guitar picking, and a whimsical backtrack, the group gave a performance that had goosebumps spreading and arm hair rising.
Following the performance, Hodgson played a hilarious parody of the song that paid homage to the many Tim Hortons he has come across on his journey through Canada, making the crowd roar with laughter.
About half way through the show Hodgson and his powerhouse band laid down fan favourite and globally known track “The Logical Song." Immediately, fans were out of their seats dancing across the floor and singing along for the songs entirety.
For 21 songs, ranging from Supertramp chart toppers to Hodgson’s solo compositions, fans sat and watched in pure euphoria regularly standing up to give a much deserved standing ovation.
A vision of pure talent, Hodgson and the group of truly gifted musicians alongside him gave more than a little bit in an honest and striking two and a half hour performance that was unparalleled to many of those who have graced the Prospera Place stage this year.

Roger Hodgson continues to give a little bit
CAM FULLER, SASKATOON STARPHOENIX
Published on: November 7, 2016
Roger Hodgson has been on his own twice as long as he was in Supertramp but he will always be associated with the songs he wrote for that band: Give a Little Bit, Dreamer, Take the Long Way Home, Breakfast in America. Hodgson gave a little bit of his time, you might say, to chat about his life, career and current tour.
“I’ve always adored Canada,” he says. “I’ve thought about moving here many, many times. I’ve heard that one in 20 Canadians had Breakfast in America and Crime of the Century, which I thought is an amazing statistic.”
Hodgson still has the diamond awards for those the albums.
“They’re the most special awards I ever, ever got,” he says.
Hodgson formed Supertramp with Rick Davies in 1969. They had their first hits in the early 1970s and by 1979 they were world famous.
Davies and Hodgson ultimately drifted apart with Hodgson leaving the band in 1983, taking 15 years off to raise his kids.
Q: Do you get nostalgic at all? I was going to ask if you could re-live one year of your career what would it be?
A: I really don’t. I don’t get nostalgic. I never think about Supertramp even though Supertramp was 14 years of my life. It was a wonderful adventure. I grew up, I learned a lot about myself and about life through it, but right now it’s a whole new era and I’m having more fun and having a much deeper connection with the audience. People tell me I’m singing so much better now than I did with Supertramp, and I can hear it, believe me.
It’s impossible not to notice Hodgson’s face in concert clips – he’s practically glowing. Concerts feel like a spiritual and emotional workout, he says.
“It’s something that I love to do. And, luckily, I have these lovely songs that I’ve written to sing that I love playing. They’re all different, yet they’re all pieces of me that I can totally relate to, and thank God everyone in the audience still relates to, so I’m a very fortunate guy.”
Q: Is there a double-edged sword being associated with Supertramp, because it will follow you forever.
A: It doesn’t really bother me. Obviously, I didn’t expect to leave Supertramp because to me I created Supertramp and it was really so much part of my brainchild and my passion. I totally appreciated people’s love for it. It was a wonderful part of my life and yet I live very much in the present. And what’s happening now is much more to me than the whole Supertramp experience.
Hodgson says he doesn’t take for granted how powerful music is and what his songs mean to his fans. He wants to be their voice, to express what they want to say but may not have the ability to say it. He calls that an amazing thing to do.
Q: Are you still writing songs, how creative are you these days?
A: If I have time, I write a song. Mostly it happens on the road. I do have a backlog of 60 unrecorded songs, so often in sound check I’ll throw one at the band and we’ll go through it and if it clicks and it sounds good enough we’ll throw it in the show a few days later.

Roger Hodgson Rekindles His Canadian Love
Affair with November Tour
Former Supertramp co-founder, vocalist and songwriter Roger Hodgson
begins his latest Canadian tour Nov. 7 in Quebec City, with a number of dates
in Ontario and western Canada to follow.
Posted by Jim Barber | November 2, 2016
Over the past four decades, Canada has had a love affair with the music created by Roger Hodgson. From his days fronting the legendary British progressive rock band Supertramp, up to his regular sold out tours of the Great White North over the past decade, the 66-year-old singer/songwriter continues to enjoy a remarkably powerful relationship with fans in this nation.
Hodgson tours throughout the world, but has a special place in his heart for Canada, where he returns practically every year for a run of shows, including his epic recurring two-night engagements at Casino Rama near Orillia, Ontario. His shows there on Nov. 11 and Nov. 12, accompanied by a full orchestra and choir, mark his 13th year of appearances at the 5,000-seat venue, and is part of a short fall tour that begins in Quebec City on Nov. 7, then moves to Ottawa the following evening, before he returns to Kingston for the first time in decades for a show at the Rogers K-Rock Centre on Nov. 9. Then there are the Rama dates, shows across prairie provinces, and ending his jaunt Nov. 29 in Victoria, B.C.
“Canada has always been a special place for me. Canada discovered Supertramp before America did, actually. The history of my relationship with Canada spans from the
Crime of the Centuryry album [released in 1974] and goes right through beyond
Breakfast In America [1979] and into my solo career. It’s incredible the support that the music has received from Canada. And I don’t know if you know, but I have a couple of Diamond Awards back home which means that one million Canadians owned
Crime of the Century and one million Canadians owned
Breakfast in America. At the time I think the population was somewhere around 20 million so that means one in 20 Canadians owned those albums, which is a pretty amazing statistic,” said Hodgson, taking a break from rehearsals just outside Milwaukee.
“And it is a love affair that has seemingly endured all these years. Now it’s for Roger Hodgson specifically. There aren’t as many people who know me by name, but slowly they are realizing that what they are going to see if they are coming to see a Roger Hodgson show is, to me, the best of Supertramp. Plus I think the fact that it’s a different vibe now, the shows are more intimate and there’s a real heart to heart connection with the audience is drawing people consistently to the shows.”
Hodgson and former Supertramp bandmate Rick Davies shared all the songwriting credits equally in the same manner as John Lennon and Paul McCartney. Knowing who actually wrote a specific song is easy to determine as Davies sung his compositions, while Hodgson sang his own. Thus, the majority of the band’s biggest hits, all of which are staples in his show to this day, were in fact composed solely by Hodgson. These include
The Logical Song, Give A Little Bit, Dreamer, Take the Long Way Home, Breakfast in America, School, It’s Raining Againin and
Fool’s Overture.
These are songs that have become ingrained in popular culture and their lyrical depth and emotive music have imbedded themselves on the hearts and minds of millions of fans of all ages around the world. Which is why it feels like such an intimate, joyous environment at a Roger Hodgson show, even if the show is in a venue the size of Casino Rama’s Entertainment Centre or the K-Rock Centre in Kingston.
“I prefer playing smaller places compared to the big stadiums and arenas when I was with Supertramp. I like places where I can have a real connection. These songs have been a part of so many lives, especially up there in Canada. So it’s amazing for me as a performer, someone who wants to give people a rich experience, to look out and see people crying or see people hugging each other, or their eyes looking skyward as they go back and remember the song from a particular point in their life. I think it’s an amazing gift to be able to give to people and I really don’t take it lightly. I am very grateful for it.,” he said, adding that he is also enjoying seeing a broad age range of fans at his shows.
“A lot of the younger generation tell me that the music was playing in the house when they were growing up and they fell in love with it themselves. Others are just looking for music that has a little more depth to it and I guess they have somehow stumbled across Supertramp and my songs. But what amazes me is when I look out and I see multiple generations, like a father and son or daughter, or even a whole family sometimes coming to see my shows. It’s very special when you can go and enjoy the same music and, I don’t know about you, but I never did that with my parents. So I think it’s very rare and very special and then the ones that I meet after the show say how special it is that they could share an experience with loved ones that involved the same music.”
There is an almost ethereal peacefulness at a Roger Hodgson concert, even when the songs are more up-tempo. Much is this comes from Hodgson’s own calm, centred demeanour, as well as his deeply-held belief that music is more than just something to while away the hours, that it has a substantive, positive impact on people’s lives.
“I think there is still so much we can do with music; we haven’t begun to scratch the surface. Music, to me, is a sacred art form and really it’s not about the entertainers getting their egos stroked. To me it’s about taking down the barriers and creating an alchemical connection that takes people somewhere. It is a healing journey and an uplifting event – that’s what I feel about it,” he said.d.

Roger is back on tour in the US and Canada this fall.
To celebrate, we are holding a BIG contest for fans worldwide. It’s time to get creative!
The Roger Hodgson Store (http://www.RogerHodgsonStore.com) wants the best fan designs for a tour tee that will be featured on his upcoming fall tour. From July 16 to August 20, we will be accepting entries to receive consideration as Roger’s official tour tee. The winning design(s) will be selected by Roger and his staff and a prize package will awarded to the designer(s). This is a rare opportunity to show off your creative talents to the world and see your art on the backs of Roger’s fans!
Each prize will consist of a pair of tickets to your choice from select US/Canada shows, post show meet and greet/photo opportunity with Roger, as well as a personalized and autographed vinyl copy of the Breakfast in America LP. Plus, of course, you will receive two shirts featuring your design in your choice of sizes. The name of the artist(s) for the chosen design(s) will also be featured with the artwork on the t-shirt.
RULES for this contest are as follows:
*The selections by the judges are final and entirely based on what we feel are the best designs for Roger’s march.
*All artwork submitted is done so freely and becomes the property of The Roger Hodgson Store to use and alter as we think best.
*We may choose to combine elements from different designs in order to achieve our final design and if so, multiple prize packages may be awarded at our discretion.
*This contest is open to fans worldwide and while the design will be debuted on the US/Canada tour, we may choose to offer it (or a variation of it) worldwide in 2017.
*Should a winning entry come from a fan outside of the US or Canada, we can offer two tickets to a 2017 show that is geographically more convenient for you.
*Travel and accommodations are not provided.
*There is no limit to the number of entries you can submit.
*The winning designers will be contacted by September 20, 2016.
*Winner(s) names will be announced on Roger’s sites after they are notified. The winning art will be displayed, as well.
GUIDELINES and design hints:
*Be as creative as you like. The best designs are often the result of what inspires you most about Roger’s music.
*Art should be submitted as a graphic in VECTOR format EPS file suitable for screen printing. The maximum screen print size is 12” wide by 15” high so designs that wrap around the body will not be considered.
*A digital mock up of your graphic design on a tee shirt should accompany the art files.
*You may submit multiple mock ups with alternative colours of the same design.
*We are always looking for new and creative ways to display the list of tour cities on the back so added consideration will be given to back designs as well.
*Tour cities may be found at
http://www.RogerHodgson.com or
https://www.Facebook.com/RogerHodgson/events.
*The winning front and back designs do not need to come from the same designer, we may mix them together!
*All designs need to include Roger Hodgson somewhere in either the front design, back design or both.
*You may use any of Roger’s song title names in the design or lyrics from Roger’s songs.
*Do not use the name Supertramp in your designs.
*We are looking for designs that have potential for worldwide touring as well as designs that might specifically appeal to fans on the 2016 US/Canada tour. We may very well end up selecting more than one design as a result.
*To help maintain consistency of the tee shirt colour(s) we ask that you select colours from one of the following: Gildan 2000, Gildan 5000, Fruit of the Loom 3930R, Fruit of the Loom HD6R. Here is a link to those shirts with our supplier in Canada.
