Roger Hodgson, la inconfundible voz de Supertramp actúa hoy en Rosario

 El músico inglés se sube a las 21.30 al escenario de Metropolitano, frente al parque Scalabrini Ortiz. Autor de grandes canciones como "The Logical song", "Breakfast in America", "Give a Little bit" o "Dreamer", Hogdson también supo eclipsar como solista a la banda que lo catapultó a la fama mundial.

A Roger Hodgson, quien actúa esta noche en Metropolitano, se lo suele llamar o presentar como la “legendaria voz de Supertramp”, algo que no es exactamente así porque la banda inglesa en la época de mayor creatividad, esto es al promediar los años 70, era un grupo que tenía dos cantantes. Hodgson compartía la composición e interpretación de canciones con Rick Davis, quien para ser justos también aportó lo suyo.

De todas maneras, de la aguda voz de Hodgson, nacido el 21 de marzo en Portsmouth, Inglaterra, salieron una decena de temas que quedaron grabados a fuego en un par de generaciones y que con justicia también le permitieron llevarse consigo la fama de Supertramp, algo que supo reforzar con una ascendente, al menos al principio, carrera como solista.

La leyenda cuenta que el grupo nació a principios de los 70, en el Reino Unido. Que un millonario holandés, Stanley August Miesegaes, quedó fascinado con el talento de estos músicos y que de un día para otro se transformó en su mecenas. El primer trabajo de la banda se tituló simplemente “Supertramp”, que pasó sin pena ni gloria. Año y medio después el grupo lanzaría su segundo álbum, que se tituló “Indelibly Stamped”. Ya por aquella época la dupla compositiva Hodgson-Davis ya comenzaba a afianzarse. Todas las canciones aparecían atribuidas al dúo, independientemente de quien las componía, al mejor estilo Lennon-McCartney.

Pero el espaldarazo definitivo de Supertramp llegó en 1974 con el tercer disco, “Crime of the Century”, donde apareció lo que años después figuraría como el primer clásico de la banda, “Dreamer”. A partir de ese momento se inició lo que muchos fans de la época denominaron “Los años dorados”, con cuatro discos de superlativo peso artístico.

“Breakfast in America”, inmediatamente después de “Crime…” se transformó rápidamente en su suceso en repercusión y ventas con tres canciones que escalaron de inmediato en los charts y el gusto de la gente, “The Logical song”, la canción que da título al trabajo y “Take a long way home”.
Supertramp siguió por el buen camino al ingresar a la década de los ochenta, pero tras la aparición de “Famous Last Word”, en 1983, Roger Hodgson decide implementar un drástico cambio de vida. El grupo ya se había transformado en una “banda de estadios” y el éxito masivo parece que no le caía nada bien a Hodgson, todo eso sumado a algunas tensiones internas dentro de la banda.

En ese entonces, el cantante, tecladista y guitarrista, una de las espadas más afiladas de Supertramp decidió llevar una vida más espiritual y estar más cerca de su familia. Pero estar lejos de los grandes escenarios no le quitó resto para volver con buenas canciones. Y así fue que en 1984, tan sólo un año después de despedirse de sus ex compañeros, Hodgson volvió al ruedo con “In the eye of the Storm”, con el que vendió dos millones de discos en todo el mundo. Con “In jeopardy”, “Had a dreams” y “Lovers in the wind”, el músico demostró que era capaz de sobrevivir al grupo que lo vio nacer artísticamente. No es una exageración afirmar que con su carrera solista eclipsó a Supertramp.

Tres años después fue el turno de “Hai, hai”, pero un accidente doméstico le dejó graves secuelas en las muñecas que lo apartaron de la música por varios años. Los médicos le dijeron que no podría volver a tocar, pero a fuerza de mucha fe y largos períodos de terapia, Hodgson se recuperó y en 2.000 volvió con un disco titular “Open the door”.
Poco más tarde se incorporó a la Ringo All Star Band y ya en el siglo XXI fue invitado por William y Harry, los hijos de Lady Di, para que participar en el homenaje a la fallecida princesa de Gales que se realizó en 2007. Hodgson accedió a cantar en esa oportunidad “Give a Little bit”, la canción favorita de Lady Di.

El músico que se presenta esta noche en Rosario, en su segunda visita a la ciudad después de catorce años, siempre demostró una faceta solidaria. En ocasión de la reciente reedición de “Breakfast in America”, que recibió un premio de la Asociación Americana de Autores y Compositores, no dudó en ceder las regalías que recibió por ese trabajo a la Cruz Roja Internacional, a UNICEF y a las entidades que ayudaron a las víctimas del tsumani y el huracán Katrina.

Doctors said he could not return to play, but by dint of great faith and long periods of therapy, Hodgson was recovered and returned in 2000 with an album named "Open the door".
Shortly afterwards he joined Ringo's All Star Band and already in the XXI century he was invited by William and Harry, Diana's children, to participate in the tribute to the late Princess of Wales held in 2007. Hodgson agreed to sing on that occasion "Give a Little Bit," Lady Di's favourite song.

The musician who is presented tonight at Rosario, in his second visit to the city after fourteen years, always showed a caring side.  On the occasion of the recent reissue of "Breakfast in America"​​, which received an award from the American Association of Authors and Composers, he didn't hesitate to give the royalties he received for this work to the International Red Cross, UNICEF and the institutions that helped the victims of the tsunami and Hurricane Katrina.
