Przedstawiam Szanownym Państwu relację z niedawnego koncertu Rogera Hodgsona w Dublinie, na który wybrał się nasz dobry irlandzki znajomy, a zarazem przyjaciel "Nawiedzonego Studia" - Andrzej Gwoździk. Gorąco polecam ...

Przeoczyłem wszystkie zapowiedzi - jeśli jakiekolwiek były - i o tym, że Roger Hodgson zaśpiewa w Dublinie dowiedziałem się, kiedy kasy biletowe świeciły już pustkami. Nie pozostało mi nic innego, jak każdego dnia z nadzieją sprawdzać wszystkie irlandzkie portale aukcyjne w poszukiwaniu wejściówek z drugiej ręki. Czas płynął, termin koncertu zbliżał się wielkimi krokami, a ja utwierdzałem się w przekonaniu, że przyjdzie mi obejść się smakiem. Aż w końcu udało się. Na tydzień przed występem Rogera Hodgsona zdobyłem dwa bilety. Siedem dni minęło bardzo szybko, i nim się obejrzałem, nadeszła niedziela 30 kwietnia.

Jako pierwszy na scenie pojawił się konferansjer, który w paru zdaniach zapowiedział artystę. Specjalnie napisałem "zapowiedział", bo przedstawiać Rogera Hodgsona nie było potrzeby. Zgromadzona publiczność - ponad tysiąc osób, bo tyle może pomieścić dubliński klub Vicar Street - znała go doskonale. Był rówieśnikiem większości. Średnia wieku na widowni oscylowała pewnie w granicach 55 lat, choć tu i ówdzie mignęła mi twarz jakiegoś młodziutkiego trzydziestolatka.
W tym miejscu pozwolę sobie na osobistą dygresję. Lubię takie kameralne koncerty. Takie, na które przychodzą prawdziwi fani artysty. Takie, na których pojawiają się ludzie, którzy faktycznie chcą przyjść, a nie tacy co muszą, jak to bywa w przypadku U2, czy Stinga...
  Mniej więcej o godzinie 20:40 rozległa się burza braw, a na scenę wkroczył lider legendarnej grupy Supertramp - w towarzystwie jednego tylko muzyka - doskonałego Aarona Macdonalda i bez dalszych wstępów zabrzmiały pierwsze takty wielkiego przeboju "Take The Long Way Home".
  Przez ponad dwie kolejne godziny królowała muzyka Rogera Hodgsona. Taka pisana przez duże "M". Pochodząca z wszystkich okresów twórczości tego Artysty. Od szlagierów, które znamy z jego działalności zespołowej z Rickiem Davisem, po utwory solowe. Zagranie każdego z nich, Roger Hodgson najczęściej poprzedzał krótką historyjką, bądź swobodnie gawędził z publicznością. Na przykład: po odśpiewaniu pierwszej piosenki zauważył spóźnioną parkę, dyskretnie przemykającą na swoje miejsce i zwracając się do niej z uśmiechem powiedział "...spóźniliście się, ale nie ma się czym przejmować, straciliście tylko najlepszą piosenkę tego wieczoru...".

Skoro już jesteśmy przy tym co mówił i jak się zachowywał na scenie Roger Hodgson, moją uwagę zwrócił bijący od niego spokój. Mieliśmy przed sobą człowieka, który nikomu niczego nie musi już udowadniać, który nie musi zapełniać stadionów i królować na listach przebojów. Kogoś, kto zna wartość swoich piosenek, kto tworzy z potrzeby serca i z radością dzieli się owocami swego talentu. Pogodny, skromny człowiek, wyraźnie wzruszony gorącym przyjęciem jakie zgotowała mu publiczność. Z drugiej strony, każdy kto choć trochę zna jego twórczość, nie mógł spodziewać się zobaczenia kogoś innego. Od dawna słynie on jako twórca niezwykle uduchowionych tekstów. Na co sam zwrócił uwagę mówiąc - "...niektóre moje piosenki są niczym modlitwa, do tej kategorii należy choćby ta...", po czym usłyszeliśmy "Lord It Is Mine". Prywatnie jedną z moich ulubionych. Wielkie wrażenie zrobił na mnie również utwór "Puppet Dance", poprzedzony opowieścią o tym, że powstał on jako odpowiedź na stratę bliskiej osoby. Stratę, która nauczyła Rogera, że śmierć nie jest końcem, czymś czego należy się bać, że powinniśmy częściej o niej mówić. Niesamowite słowa. Podobnie z zainteresowaniem wysłuchałem opowieści o genezie innej z jego piosenek. Otóż pewnej nocy, gdzieś w Kalifornii, Artysta ten wszedł na jedną z gór i patrząc w rozgwieżdżone niebo zaczął grać na gitarze. W ten sposób zrodziło się "Even In The Quietest Moments". Takich historii było więcej. Choćby o tym, jak to będąc dzieckiem nie cierpiał szkoły z internatem, do której uczęszczał, ale dzięki wspomnieniom, z której mógł napisać "The Logical Song". Czy też kolejną mówiącą o zamknięciu się w sobie i związanych z tym przeżyciach, odzwierciedlonych w genialnym "Hide In Your Shell".

Każdy z utworów, zagranych wczorajszego wieczora należy uznać za wybitny, wiele z nich towarzyszy nam od lat i jak to powiedziano na otwarcie koncertu - stały się one elementem ścieżki dźwiękowej naszego życia, niemniej słyszane na żywo nabrały nowego blasku. Niesamowite wrażenie zrobiła na mnie odegrana na zakończenie podstawowej części występu minisuita "Fool's Overture".
 W tym miejscu muszę napisać parę słów o muzyku towarzyszącym Rogerowi Hodgsonowi. Kanadyjczyk Aaron Macdonald sam jeden zastąpił cały zespół, dwojąc się i trojąc pośród przeróżnych instrumentów. Szczególnie dało się to zauważyć podczas wykonywanie wyżej wspomnianej piosenki. Z prawdziwą wirtuozerią wygrywał partie saksofonowe, tak dobrze znane z przebojów grupy Supertramp. Ponadto świetnie radził sobie z harmonijką ustną, flażoletem, keyboardem, jakimiś efektami dźwiękowymi (Big Ben, czy chóralnie odśpiewane "Jerusalem") oraz partiami wokalnymi. Prawdziwy człowiek orkiestra.
O kunszcie wokalnym gwiazdy tego wieczoru mogę powiedzieć tylko tyle, że czas biegnie nieubłaganie, ale głos Rogera Hodgsona nic nie traci na sile i pięknie. W wieku sześćdziesięciu siedmiu lat najlepszym zdarzają się drobne potknięcia, lecz ja nie wyłowiłem żadnych. Śpiewał z wręcz młodzieńczym wigorem, grając kolejno na gitarze, fortepianie i keyboardzie. Spod jego palców wydobywały się magiczne melodie, płynące z samego serca, i jak wierzę: do serc trafiające. Dało się odczuć specjalną więź artysty z publicznością. Było w tym coś autentycznie mistycznego. Coś, co zdarza się jedynie podczas obcowania z prawdziwą sztuką. Przepiękne przedstawienie. Na swój sposób w skromnej oprawie - choć fantastycznie nagłośnione, bez fajerwerków i skąpo odzianych tancerek, a jednak bardzo prawdziwe, szczere i zachwycające. Jeden z takich koncertów, jakie pamięta się latami.

Myślę, że nawet najbardziej wybredny fan Rogera Hodgsona wyszedł wczoraj z klubu Vicar Street usatysfakcjonowany. Pomijając brak przecudnej pieśni "Only Because Of You", na usłyszenie której szczególnie liczyłem, pojawiły się wszystkie największe przeboje tego Artysty. Fenomenalny i niezwykle dla mnie ważny "Lovers In The Wind", przebojowe "Breakfast In America", "The Logical Song" i "It's Raining Again" (który jak zawsze uważałem mógłby zostać hymnem Irlandii), poruszający "Don't Leave Me Now", czy niemal taneczny "Dreamer", przy którym nikt już nie potrafił ustać w miejscu.

  Skrupulatnie zapisywałem kolejność wszystkich zagranych przez pana Hodgsona utworów, by móc pełną listę przedstawić czytelnikom Blogu Nawiedzonego. Starałem się również wykonać kilka zdjęć, co nie było łatwe, zważywszy na obowiązujący zakaz fotografowania, którego przestrzegania pilnowała obsługa sali. Nie porażają może one jakością, ale mam nadzieję, że choć trochę uatrakcyjnią niniejszą relację. Żałując, że nie mogło Szanownego Państwa być tam ze mną, dziękuję za przeczytanie mej relacji i jeśli będzie to kiedyś możliwe zachęcam do posłuchania Rogera Hodgsona na żywo. WARTO!!!

P.S. Jeszcze - czego nie napisałem - na koncercie był ze mną kolega Piotr, który akurat miał urodziny, i co zabawne: siedział na miejscu 51/4 - a jak się okazało, całe dzieciństwo mieszkał pod adresem 4/51. On poniekąd przyczynił się do tego, że poszliśmy. Kiedyś nagrałem mu składankę piosenek Supertramp, i tak mu się spodobało, że od tamtego czasu wiecznie mówił, że chciałby zobaczyć Hodgsona na żywo. Aż się udało. Tak, że obejrzeliśmy razem, potem poszliśmy na chińskie żarcie, a później jechaliśmy pustą autostradą goniąc sierp księżyca, zaś przygrywał nam David Gilmour i Mark Knopfler. Przyjemny wieczór. Pozdrawiam.

ROGER HODGSON - Dublin, April 30, 2017

I present to you a report from Roger Hodgson's recent concert in Dublin, where our good Irish friend and a friend of the "Haunted Studio" - Andrzej Gwoździk - went to visit.

There was nothing left but every day hoping to check out all the Irish auction sites for second hand tickets. Time went by, the date of the concert was approaching with great strides, and I was convinced that it would come to me to take a taste of it. Until finally succeeded. One week before Roger Hodgson's performance, I won two tickets. Seven days passed very quickly, and before I looked back, came Sunday, April 30.

The first on the stage appeared the announcer, who in a few sentences announced the artist. I specifically wrote "announced" because it depicted Roger Hodgson no need. The audience gathered - more than a thousand people, because the Dublin club Vicar Street can accomodate - she knew him well. He was a peer to the majority. The average age in the audience was probably around 55 years, though here and there a youngster of some thirty years old was showing me.
  At this point I will allow myself a personal digression. I like such intimate concerts. Such are the real fans of the artist. Such are the people who actually want to come and not that they have to, as is the case with U2 or Sting ...
  About 20:40, there was a storm of applause, and the leader of the legendary Supertramp band - accompanied by one of the only musicians - Aaron Macdonald, and without further adulation, took the lead in the big hit "Take The Long Way Home."
  Over the next two hours, Roger Hodgson's music was ruling. This is written by a large "M". Originating from all periods of the artist's work. From the hits we know to solos. To play each of them, Roger Hodgson usually preceded a short story, or talked freely with the audience. For example: after singing the first song, he noticed a belated arrival, discreetly slipping into their place and turning to her with a smile said "... you were late, but nothing to worry about, you just missed the best song of the evening ..."

Since we are already talking about what he did and how Roger Hodgson acted on his stage, my attention turned away from him. We had a man in front of us who could not prove anything to anyone who did not have to fill the stadiums and reign in the charts. Someone who knows the value of his songs, who creates for the need of heart and joyfully shares the fruits of his talent. A cheerful, modest man, clearly moved by the warm reception that the audience gave him. On the other hand, anyone who at least knows his work, could not expect to see someone else. It has long been known as the creator of extremely spiritual texts. When attention was drawn to himself, he said - "... some of my songs are like prayers, this one belongs to this category...", then we heard "Lord It Is Mine." Privately one of my favorites. "Puppet Dance" also made a big impression on me, followed by the story that it was created as a response to the loss of a loved one. The loss that taught Roger that death is not the end, not something to be afraid of, that we should talk more about. Amazing words. Similarly, I listened to stories about the origin of another of his songs. One night, somewhere in California, this Artist stepped into one of the mountains and staring into the starry sky began to play the guitar. In this way, "Even In The Quietest Moments" was born. Such history was more. Even if it was as a child, he did not suffer from the boarding school he attended, but thanks to the memories from which he could write "The Logical Song". Or another talk about closing in on yourself and related experiences, reflected in the brilliant "Hide In Your Shell."

Each of the songs played yesterday evening is considered outstanding, many of which have accompanied us for years and as it was said at the opening of the concert - they have become part of the soundtrack of our lives, but the live sound has taken on a new glow. An amazing impression made me play at the end of the basic part of mini-suite performance "Fool's Overture." At this point I have to write a few words about the music accompanying Roger Hodgson. Canadian Aaron Macdonald was the only one to replace the entire team, doubling and scrambling among the various instruments. This was especially noticeable when performing the song mentioned above. With real virtuosity he won the saxophone ones, so well known from the Supertramp hits. In addition, he had a great deal with harmonica, flageolet, keyboards, some sound effects (Big Ben, or chorus singing "Jerusalem") and vocal parts. A real man orchestra.
About the star vocalist this evening I can only say that time is running inexorably, but Roger Hodgson's voice is not lost in strength and beauty. At the age of sixty-seven, the best tricks happen, but I did not catch any. He sang with a youthful vibe, playing the guitar, the piano, and the keyboard. From his fingers came the magic melodies that flowed from the heart, and as I believe: touched hearts. There was a special bond between the artist and the audience. There was something genuinely mystical about it. Something that only happens when dealing with real art. Beautiful show. In its own way in a modest setting - albeit fantastically, without fireworks and scantily dressed dancers, yet very true, sincere and delightful. One of such concerts, which is remembered for years.

I think even the most fussy Roger Hodgson fan came out yesterday from Vicar Street satisfied. Apart from the lack of the wonderful song "Only Because Of You," I heard that I was counting on all the greatest hits of this Artist. Phenomenal and extremely important to me is "Lovers In The Wind", hit "Breakfast In America", "The Logical Song" and "It's Raining Again" (which I always thought could be the Irish anthem), moving "Do Not Leave Me Now," or almost danceable "Dreamer," which no one else could stand still in place.

 I carefully recorded the order of all of Mr. Hodgson's songs to make a complete list to the readers of the Haunted Blog. I also tried to make a few photos, which was not easy, given the binding ban on shooting video, whose service of observance was watching the room. They do not compromise their quality, but I hope they make a little more of a difference this relationship. PS Still - what I did not write - at the concert was my friend Peter, who just happened to have a birthday, and what fun: he sat on the spot 51/4 - and as it turned out, his entire childhood lived at 4/51. He somehow contributed to the fact that we went. I used to record him a compilation of Supertramp songs, and he liked it so much that he had always said he would like to see Hodgson live. Until it was successful. So that we looked together, then we went to Chinese food and then we drove empty highway driving the crescent moon, while David Gilmour and Mark Knopfler played us.
