Roger Hodgson, die ht dabei sehr viele Menschen trotz des schlechten Wetters sehr glücklich. Die Macht von unsterblicher Popmusik und wie es wirklich war…

Es vergeht kein Tag, an dem im deutschen Formatradio nicht mindestens zwei oder drei Supertramp-Stücke über den Äther gehen. Egal ob "The Logical Song", "Breakfast In America" oder "It's Raining Again": Supertramp ist die Superpopgruppe aus den Siebzigern, die bis zur Trennung von Roger Hodgson 1983 verkaufstechnisch alle Rekorde brach.

Des Sängers neue Kleider

Die übrig gebliebenen Supertramp-Mitglieder um Tastenmann Rick Davies versackten musikalisch in der Bedeutungslosigkeit und leben seither lediglich von ihrem Namen und der großen Zeit 1975-1982. Auch Roger Hodgson erreichte nie wieder die Höhen seiner Supertramp-Zeit, aber schon seit vielen Jahren geht er wieder regelmäßig auf Tour.

Der Auftakt seiner "Breakfast in America-Worldtour" findet an einem kühlen Abend im wunderschönen Ambiente des gut gefüllten Weinheimer Schlossparks statt. Er habe extra neue Bühnenkleidung angeschafft, lässt er die Zuschauer wissen und der Auftakt zur Welttournee müsse, so Hodgson augenzwinkernd, unbedingt in Weinheim stattfinden.

Unverwechselbar und unwiderstehlich

Der 65-jährige Engländer strahlt nach wie vor Wärme und Gelassenheit aus, die er sich bis heute bewahrt hat. Als erstes Lied stimmt er mit seiner hohen, unverwechselbaren Tenorstimme den 1979er Supertramp-Klassiker "Take The Long Way Home" an. Es ist der Auftakt zu einem Abend voller Hits.

Hodgson spielt an diesem Abend noch vier weitere Stücke der Platte, nach der die Tournee benannt ist: "Breakfast in America". Besonders "Child Of Vision", das progressive Schlussstück des Albums, ist nah am Original und ein absoluter Hörgenuss. Seine unwiderstehliche Stimme ist immer noch intakt und schafft fast alle Höhen.

Regen und glückliche Menschen

Als das Wetter nach einer halben Stunde den Geist aufgibt und Regen auf die tausenden Besucher im Schlosspark herabstürzt, entschließt sich der Sänger routiniert und doch spontan, das eigentlich für den Zugabenteil vorgesehene "It's Raining Again" vorzuziehen. Fast alle Zuschauer stehen von ihren Sitzen auf und tanzen im Regen.

Überall sieht man strahlende und mitsingende Menschen, was den Gutmenschen, Esoteriker und Umweltschützer Roger Hodgson sichtbar erfüllt. Man spürt, wie eng viele der 50 bis 60-jährigen mit dieser Musik seit ihrer Schulzeit verbunden sind. Dieser eingängige Pop hat die Jahrzehnte überdauert und zaubert immer noch ein Lächeln in die Gesichter. Hodgsons Ansagen handeln vom "Glücklichsein", "der Sinnlosigkeit von Kriegen" und "der Kraft der Liebe" – klassische Althippie-Themen also.

Kompetente Band

Von den vier Begleitmusikern brilliert besonders Aaron MacDonald, der auch schon im Jahr 2010 in Weinheim mit dabei war, an Saxofon, Oboe und Mundharmonika. Er weckt Erinnerungen an John Helliwell, dem einstigen Publikumsliebling der alten Supertrampbesetzung und erhält bei seinen Einsätzen Szenenapplaus.

Die Band schafft es durch ihr kompaktes Spiel und die mehrstimmige Begleitung, die alten Hits wirklich frisch und werkgetreu auf die Bühne zu bringen. Dieses Musikhandwerk scheint der heutigen Popmusik abhanden gekommen zu sein, wo Autotune und andere technische Hilfsmittel den Takt vorgeben.

Perlen aus dem Soloschaffen

Kein Stück der Setlist ist jünger als das mahnende "Death & A Zoo" aus dem Jahr 2000. Hodgson hat insgesamt fünf Stücke seiner überschaubaren Solokarriere im Gepäck.

Neben seiner letzten Hitsingle "In Jeopardy" aus dem Jahr 1987 können vor allem das majestätische "Only Because Of You" und seine allererste Solosingle überhaupt "Had A Dream (Sleeping With The Enemy)", beide aus dem Jahr 1984, überzeugen. Bei letzterem greift der Meister sogar in die E-Gitarren-Saiten, wodurch die Version fast schon rockig gerät. Eine Ausnahme an diesem Abend, an dem Hodgson vorwiegend an E-Piano und Flügel agiert.

Noch mehr Hits zum Finale

Der Supertramp-Fan darf sich beim großem Finale an "Dreamer", dem ausladenden "Fools Overture" und dem unverwüstlichen "Give A Little Bit" erfreuen, bevor der Meister tatsächlich für eine weitere Zugabe nochmals nach knapp zwei Stunden die Bühne betritt. Drei Stücke bietet er zur Auswahl, "Hide In Your Shell" vom 1974er "Jahrhundertalbum" "Crime Of The Century" macht schließlich das Rennen.

Damit setzt Hodgson einen anspruchsvollen Schlusspunkt, der ihn gesanglich voll fordert. Die Party könnte noch stundenlang weitergehen, aber dann ist Schluss und der ehemalige Supertramp-Sänger verspricht, den Fünfjahresturnus seiner Weinheimer Konzerte beizubehalten. Es wäre allen zu wünschen, die diesen denkwürdigen Abend miterleben durften.

Roger Hodgson, the voice of Supertramp, opened the Weinheim Cultural Summer 2015 and makes up a lot of people very happy despite the bad weather.

There is not a day on which the German format radio does not have at least two or three Supertramp songs over the airwaves. Whether "The Logical Song", "Breakfast In America" or "It's Raining Again": Supertramp is the Superpopgroup from the seventies, which up to the separation of Roger Hodgson in 1983 technically broke all selling records.
 

The singer's new clothes

The remaining Supertramp member keyboardist Rick Davies went musically into insignificance and is live since then only by the name and the golden age from 1975 to 1982. Also Roger Hodgson never again reached the heights of his Supertramp time, for many years he regularly goes back on tour.

The kick-off of his "Breakfast in America World Tour" takes place in the beautiful ambience of Weinsheimer castle park on a cool evening. He lets the audience know had specially bought new stage clothes for the prelude to the world tour taking place in Weinheim.

Unmistakable and irresistible

The 65-year-old Englishman still radiates warmth and serenity that he has kept until today. First song agrees with its high, distinctive tenor voice to the 1979 Supertramp classic "Take The Long Way Home". It is the prelude to an evening full of hits.

Hodgson plays that night four more pieces of the plate, after which the tour is named: "Breakfast in America". Especially "Child Of Vision", the progressive closing of the album is close to the original and an absolute listening pleasure. His irresistible voice is still intact and provides almost all heights.

Rain and happy people

As the weather after half an hour gives and rain falls down on the thousands of visitors in the castle grounds, the singer spontaneously decides to not stick to routine and prefers to actually play the normal encore "It's Raining Again". Almost all viewers get up from their seats and dance in the rain.

Everywhere you see people singing along and radiating what the do-gooders, esoteric and environmentalists Roger Hodgson has in his audience. You can feel how close many of the 50 to 60 year olds connect to this music since their school days. This catchy pop has survived the decades and still bring a smile to the faces. Hodgson's announcements are about the "Happiness", "the senselessness of war" and "the power of love" - Classic hippie-themed.

Competent band

Of the four accompanying musicians shines especially Aaron Macdonald, who was in Weinheim already in 2010 with his of saxophone, oboe and harmonica. He brings back memories of John Helliwell, the former crowd favorite of the old Supertramp and receives much applause.

The band manages their compact polyphonic accompaniment to really bring the old hits fresh and original on the stage. This music craft seems to be lost in today's pop music, where Autotune and other technical means to set the pace.

Pearls from the solo work

No piece of the setlist is younger than the admonishing "Death & A Zoo" in 2000. Hodgson has a total of five pieces of his solo career.

In addition to his recent hit single "In Jeopardy" in 1987 especially the majestic "Only Because Of You" and his very first solo single can ever "Had A Dream (Sleeping With The Enemy)", both from 1984, convincing. In the latter, the master accesses even in the electric guitar strings, which the device version almost rocking. An exception to this evening when Hodgson mainly operates on electric piano.

Even more hits to the finals

The Supertramp fan can enjoy the great finale of "Dreamer", the sweeping “Fool's Overture" and the indestructible "Give A Little Bit" before the master actually again takes the stage after two hours for another encore. He gave his audience three songs to choose from. "Hide In Your Shell" from the 1974 "century album" "Crime Of The Century" finally wins the race.

The party could go on for hours, but then closes and the former Supertramp singer is expected to maintain the five-year cycle of its Weinsheimer concerts. It would be to wish all those who were allowed to witness this memorable evening.
